Scott begins the day without his two deckhands. He brings in a rookie named Isaac to tend for him while he dives. Just as they are about to leave for the day, Steve Riedel shows up, despite being fired previously by Vernon. Scott lets him work for the day against Vernon’s orders.
During Scott’s dive, he complains that he has no suction. They discover that the suction hose has detached from the flare tube underneath the dredge and is almost impossible to repair in the water. As if that isn’t bad enough, the Wild Ranger begins to take on water. Steve finds the source of the leak – a window with loose screws near one of their pontoons. Frustrated and angry, Scott pilots the dredge back to harbor while Steve bails water out of the boat to keep them from sinking along the way. Once they reach the dock, they reattach the suction hose to the flare tube within 30 seconds. They are able to head back out to try again. After a three-hour dive, Scott is exhausted. But with the good weather holding, he can’t afford to bring the dredge back into harbor yet. He reluctantly tells Steve to dive. This is his shot at redemption and to reclaim his spot of the dredge.
Scott: “If I ever go to prison, and you [Steve Riedel] walk into my cell, I’m instantly killing you and then me.”
